Bertha could smell that the little men from the camp were not far.

"Maybe they ran for the hills?" she asked out loud.

"...Maybe they ran for the hills?..." replied the echo from the old well.

"Maybe they went to the forest?" she kept wondering.

"...Maybe they went to the forest?..." the well echoed.

"Or maybe they hid in the well?" she asked herself again, increasingly annoyed.
